For our guests coming from the mainland: With the change of airline on Lord Howe, we have had a slight delay in booking flights. This should happen within the next two weeks, and you will receive information from Shelly in due course. There is no cause for concern - all the planes are booked under our name, so no chance you'll miss out!
For Lord Howe locals that need a flight, we recommend doing so as soon as practically possible, as with over 90 coming from the mainland, your preferred options may sell out. Shelly at Oxley Travel is handling all of our bookings, so please feel free to reach out to her at: shelly@oxleytravel.com.au.
Sometimes due to weather, the flights can get cancelled. SkyTrans will work with you and Shelly to work out when your next flight will be.
The most important thing is to not panic, or blame the airline, they are working to keep you safe.
You will make it to the island, sometimes the same time, sometime the day after, and they will reschedule your flight.
We will work around our guests arriving and the weather to make sure everyone has a great time.
Having you there on the island on our day is all we could ask for. If you'd like to make a gift to us on the day there will be space for that at the reception or during the week. We understand that the majority of our guests have paid significantly to make it to Lord Howe, so there is no pressure on this. Thank you!
Quite simply, travel insurance is a must. You might think this weird, given a hour and half domestic flight, but there are a lot of things outside of anyone's control that can cause a hiccup in your trip. Even if you think you are covered through credit card purchases, in the abundance of risk, we'd recommend getting a third party that definitely includes Lord Howe in the cover.
Importantly, with how the travel insurance premiums work, there is no need to do anything now.
Our travel agent Shelly will share more details on this when she sends the first invoice.
It will be a lot cheaper to get insurance closer to your travel date.
Bikes are an essential way to get around the island.
We recommend hiring a bike from Wilson's Hire. They are open most days, and are locate on Lagoon Road near town.
Wearing a helmet on Lord Howe is a non-negotiable, especially for our guests. The policeman will give you a fine if he sees you not wearing a helmet, or wearing one not properly done-up.
Mt. Gower is all but a whole day experience, and involves a series of terrain changes. The hike changes from rocky scrambles, to more gentle singletrack and then most importantly steep rope sections. This involves sharp pitches only climbable using the assistance of ropes, which can also be quite slippery.
This is a hard hike, which will take 5-7 hours minimum. We would only recommend this to those who are comfortable with a tough day out.
You can take a guided walk via one of the suppliers on the island. Alternatively, we will be organising one trip, likely after the wedding, for all those who are keen.
Lord Howe has an amazing set of walks, for a range of abilities.
We've listed below our favourites. We plan on doing heaps of group walks, so please don't feel like you have to study any maps online, but feel free to look these up to prepare nonetheless!
- Malabar Headland to Kim's Lookout (easy to medium)
- Goat House (hard)
- Intermediate Hill (medium)
- Transit Hill (easy to medium)
- Little Island (flat walk - easy)
Given how small Lord Howe is, whilst we love to do all of these activities as a large group, a lot of these ventures are better organised in smaller groups.
See this website to book or check out tours or booked activities on Lord Howe: https://lordhoweisland.info/experiences/
Wi-Fi is minimal - some guesthouses do offer this service, however any other potential is very localised.
We completely understand that people want to be connected as possible, but we'd love it if you treated your phone like a camera everywhere on the island except your rooms. Whilst you can be connected at some points of the island, its so much of a better experience when everyone is connected with each other instead of their phone!
Nope!
Call via WhatsApp or Messenger to the mainland.
Joy's Shop: The Woolworths of the island, you can get everything from a packet of Doritos, to frozen meat and even get a couple of Lord Howe t-shirts or caps produced circa 1988.
Liquor Store: Near the government complex, there's a bottle-o, which has pretty much everything you'd need for a nice afternoon out.
Diamond's: In the CBD, opposite Anchorage and nestled next to the Crooked Post, is Diamond's general store. This is the 'Thomas Dux' to Joy's, a more artisanal option for the discernible shopper. The butter chicken sausages are a hit, and you'll be a hit if you compliment the shopkeeper on your own visit.
Anchorage: If you're after a quick on-the-go meal, Anchorage do great takeaway or quick options and are pretty much open all the time. Get in early if you want to get a loaf of bread. Morning coffee also available here.
Jim's: Jim serves incredible coffee and snacks. Open irregular days during the week, so check his sign next to the museum before Joys Hill to know if he's serving that day.
There is only 14kg checked in bag allowance to fly to Lord Howe. We recommend packing lightly, but not forgetting your wedding outfit and shoes. Heels are recommended for the girls, but not essential.
Other items:
- Hats, swimmers, sunscreen and beach-attire are a must (towels are supplied by guest houses)
- The weather can be changeable, so its essential to pack at least one jumper and a pair of jeans / pants, especially for night time
- A spray / rain jacket would be handy as well
- Walking attire, including sturdy walking shoes are a must, as the hikes around Lord Howe are world class. We'd recommend packing some that you aren't afraid to get dirty.
- Lord Howe is pretty casual outside of our wedding - we'd love to see all of you in some fun outfits but keep the bow-ties and fascinators at home.
We will have this all covered for you don't worry!
There will be a few options for all of our guests on the day to get around. We'll liaise with you all once you're on the island - no one will be left behind.
As most of our guests are staying for 5 - 7 nights either side of the big day, there will be some other events to pencil into your stay. Highlights include:
- Welcome Drinks, Sunday 29th March - The Crooked Post
- Wedding Recovery, Tuesday 31st March - Location TBD on the day.
- Abbey's Birthday, Thursday 2nd April - BBQ + The Shack
There will be a myriad of other impromptu activities that we'll organise whilst you're on the island as well.
There are a few options to hire all of this gear. Noting that some of the hire places work on an honour system, whereby you can hire gear and place some cash in a box.
On Lagoon Road, near the CBD, are a series of boat sheds. You'll see the kayaks laid out on the beach and some general activity around the area. You can hire from these businesses directly, so please make yourself known to their front desks and ask about your options for the day.
Whilst kayaks and stand-ups are plentiful, there is no dedicated surfboard hire place.
The best surf on Lord Howe is on the reef breaks, accessible via a kayak / dingy or a massively long shoulder burning paddle. If you're a keen and competent surfer, we'd recommend bringing your own board on the plane - please let Shelly know if you'd like to do this.
We can also help you out with a trip out to the reef if required.
Unfortunately, there is no pram hire service on the island.
However, given the relative size of the plane, you can bring your own. Please advise Shelly when booking to ensure this is possible.
Also, there are carrier options for bikes that can be used to get little ones around quickly.
Cots can be supplied by your guesthouse.
